Methodist Dallas Medical Center is proud to announce the arrival of John Phillips as its new President. John is taking over for Martin Koonsman, MD, who has moved to become the Chief Medical Officer for the entire Methodist Health System. John is already well-known within the system, having served as the President of Methodist Mansfield for the past seven years. For me, someone who started at Methodist Dallas only seven weeks ago, seeing that the organization is able to retain talented leaders like Dr. Koonsman and John makes me think that I picked the right place to work.
If you ask John how he’s going to adjust to serving an urban community like Oak Cliff– having spent several years in suburban Mansfield– he’ll tell you that it’ll be easy because, the best part of his job is getting to meet with and talk to the people in the community that he serves. If he had his way, he’d never be in his office. At the hospital, John prefers to do rounds on the patient floors and visit with the staff and physicians, than have meetings in his office. He plans to apply that same principle when it comes to getting to know the Oak Cliff community.

Like many of us, John says he wouldn’t be where he is today –at the helm of the flagship hospital of a system with 10-hospitals– without his family. John, who grew up in Alamosa, CO, met his wife Marci at Abilene Christian University where he played football. They've been married now for 24 years. Marci was a schoolteacher for many years and recently started working as a school counselor at Mansfield ISD.
They have two teenage kids, Mac and Molly. Mac is a sophomore at UT Austin and, according to John, has embraced the weirdness of Austin mainly by letting his beard grow out. Molly, who is 6’4’’ like her dad, is a senior at Mansfield High School and will play volleyball for UT Austin next Fall. When Molly finishes high school next year, Marci and John plan to relocate to Dallas in the Oak Cliff area.

During my first meeting with John a couple of weeks ago he asked me “What’s a big, homegrown event in Oak Cliff that I could go to meet people?” Since the Fall season was coming, and I live next to Kidd Springs park, I thought “Blues, Bandits, and BBQ!”
Last year Methodist Dallas participated in the BBQ competition and won first place in the pulled pork category, a testament to the skills of the hospital’s food services team. This year we’re entering the competition again and we’re having John work the booth handing out the samples on Nov. 10. We hope you’ll come out that day and stop at the Methodist table to meet John and our team!
